Great Product, Great Service, Instructions Could Use Improvement
I ordered the fish mosaic to install on a counter top on a boat dock. The design is certainly perfect for that setting. I sized the counter top to fit the stated dimensions of the mosaic and I was impressed to find that it is exactly the specified size. From the attached photos, you can see how important that was. I have installed tile a few times before and this job was not difficult. I did have to float out the mortar bed to raise the mosaic to the level of the surrounding tile and that contributed to the one problem I had with the mosaic. It would not lie flat, and I could not weight it down in an effort to make it lie flat because the excess mortar would have squeezed out. Some tiles are thicker than others, resulting in unevenness. Friends who have looked at it say that adds to its "character". I would prefer all the tiles be the same thickness. More significantly, however, the mosaic shipped rolled inside out and once I rolled it over and laid it on my workbench, I found that some of the tiles are too close together to allow it to lie flat. Ultimately, I addressed the problem by belt sanding off the highest spots with 60 grit and then sanding it by hand with progressively finer sandpaper, ending with 1000 grit wet sanding. This put a very nice polished shine on the thickest tiles and made the colors more vivid. So, all's well that ends well, but it added to the work significantly. Along the way, I sent a couple of questions to the website, both of which were answered promptly, but not extremely thoroughly. I watched the installation video three times before beginning installation. After I finished the installation, I watched the installation video for the fourth time. This time, I noticed the instruction to remove the plastic backing. I never noticed that before, though I suspect a professional tile installer would have caught it right away. Perhaps my failure to remove the backer is the reason it does not lie flat, but I doubt it because, if that were the case, the mosaic would spread out to dimensions larger than the stated dimensions. Regardless, I would have preferred written step-by-step instructions so I could have checked them off as I went. Given the very reasonable price, a few flaws are expected. I build furniture and I can see myself ordering another mosaic from Mozaico in the future to use on a table top, but if it does not lie flat after removing the backing, I would return it.
Fish Order
Just being installed today so will know if a couple days once all the grout and borders come together and get in place. From the picture it looks like it will work very nicely. The order went as represented as did the shipping! Thanks, Bob
