Mosaic Tribute To John Lennon Unveiled in Liverpool, England

On Tuesday, May 2nd, A mosaic tribute to the late musician John Lennon was unveiled at the Salvation Army's Strawberry Field in Liverpool. The mosaic, which is 6.4 meters in diameter, was created by Mozaico. 

The mosaic features the word "Imagine" in Lennon's handwriting. It is made up of over 390,000 individual tesserae, and it took Mozaico artists almost 16 weeks to complete. 

The mosaic was commissioned by The Salvation Army, and it is located in the gardens of Strawberry Field, the site of a former children's home that inspired Lennon's song "Strawberry Fields Forever."

The unveiling of the mosaic was attended by a number of dignitaries, including Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside Mr Robert Owen, High Sheriff of Merseyside, Dr Ruth Hussey, Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Roy Gladden and Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Mr Steve Rotheram. John Lennon’s sister, Julia Baird, who is Honorary President of Strawberry Field was also in attendance along with members of Lennon’s band The Quarrymen, Mike McCartney and ‘Good Ol’ Freda’ Kelly, secretary to the Beatles.

In his speech at the unveiling, Metro Mayor of Liverpool City Region Steve Rotherham said,“This is a further addition to the wonderful offer we have in the City Region… We should be proud of what Strawberry Field has achieved. This is brilliant for Liverpool but it’s brilliant for the rest of the world. Come and enjoy Liverpool. Come and enjoy the warmth and the friendliness of Scousers.”


Strawberry Field was a Salvation Army children's home in Liverpool. Lennon used to play and take sanctuary in the gardens, and it inspired the song "Strawberry Fields Forever”. The home was closed in 2005, but the site opened to the public in 2019 as a visitor attraction with an interactive exhibition tour, gardens, cafe and gift shop.. As well as being a popular tourist attraction, Strawberry Field continues the work of The Salvation Army supporting young people in Liverpool through the Steps at Strawberry Field programmes which empower young people with barriers to employment to achieve their goals of paid employment.

The Imagine Mosaic is a permanent reminder of John Lennon's legacy. It is a beautiful piece of art that is sure to be enjoyed by visitors to Liverpool for many years to come.
