‘I believe in New Yorkers. Whether they’ve ever questioned the dream in which they live, I wouldn’t know, because I won’t ever dare ask that question.’Does this quote sound familiar? In today’s article, it will take on a new significance while exploring the vision of the mosaic man: Jim Power. The artist who designed seven mosaic light poles for his Astor Place community. Power’s mission is to mosaic all of New York City.

“My master plan is to draw the anxiety out of the city with beauty.” – Jim Power

What makes Jim Power stand out in the mosaic art community?

Power’s originality and unconventional approach to street art are most definitely the two main factors to his exceptionality. His work so far has been noted for 3 key characteristics: minimalism, momentous and innovation. The artist is always alert for future imaginative challenges.

The Legendary Mosaic Trail

For over 25 years, Jim Power, aka the mosaic man, has created one of the biggest and longest lasting public mosaic art projects in NYC with his legendary mosaic trail. The trail of dreamy mosaic art on lamp poles, planters, sidewalks and storefronts throughout New York City are some of the most familiar and universally admired artworks by a local artist.

The various mosaics illustrate historical events, recognized figures or landmarks i.e. 9/11 or the former Fillmore East, or simply act as signposts and markers. In 2004, the artist was inducted into the City Lore Peoples Hall of Fame and received an official proclamation from Mayor Bloomberg recognizing him for his selfless contribution to the city. Over the years, Jim’s work has been featured in countless television programs, newspapers, books and magazines worldwide.

Ongoing Mission

After the outreach efforts led by the Village Alliance Business Improvement District in 2013, Jim Power’s mosaic light poles came to light! According to the East Village community, the mosaic art poles were a unique reflection of their history and should be preserved. Just like Isaiah Zagar, Jim Power didn’t succeed in art exhibitions scene;

Just like Isaiah Zagar, Jim Power didn’t succeed in art exhibitions scene; however, his mosaics are now part of the permanent collection of Astor Palace, in the East Village. Finally do stop by the East Village to see the mosaics that have recently returned so far and supported the fundraising efforts for Mosaic Man, as we await the redesign of Astor Place (including the return of the cube).

Last but certainly not least, Jim Power is another creative mosaic artist who pushed the limits with a challenging vision and a dreamy influence! Next step? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear UNESCO declared the Astor Place redevelopment project a World Heritage Site, for the aesthetics and creative value as well as its significance.
