Is that Fall we see on the horizon? While we’re all waiting for the days when we can break out our sweaters and start decorating Halloween, let’s get crafty! Mosaic pumpkins are the perfect project now - and we’ve assembled some great ones for all ages.
If you’re looking for a unique piece of seasonal decor that will carry you through both Halloween and Thanksgiving, look to our favorite cucurbit: Pumpkins! Arts and crafts supply stores and big box retailers have already started stocking the materials you’ll need. Get ready to pick your favorite mosaic pumpkin project now!

Terra Cotta Tones
Keep the colors of the ubiquitous orange pumpkin fresh with these mosaic art projects! They’re wonderful when mixed in with the real thing in a tabletop or porch display - or as a long-lasting piece of seasonal decor.

This is a great way to recycle your pots at the end of the growing season. For this example, a colored grout (simply use some of your acrylic paint to tint white grout to the desired shade) was added first to the foam pumpkin.
Place your pot shards onto the wet grout, following the vertical ridges with rectangular pieces. Refer to our piece on cutting tiles into shapes for tips on how to create the right tiles for these sections. Remember: pieces can be sharp, so wear gloves.
Fill in the other areas with random pieces of your choice. Allow time to dry before displaying them outside.

Wouldn’t this look great on your own porch? This mosaic pumpkin mixes both terracotta pot pieces and coordinating pottery/china tiles for a very different look.
After painting your pumpkin with a matte black craft paint on the body, brush more green paint onto the stem. After it’s quite dry, you may begin placing your orange-shaded pottery pieces with a strong glue. As the glue dries quickly, it’s best to experiment a bit with the individual tiles to ensure they fit correctly. Use your nippers to adjust the shape and size of the pieces. For the stem, use green shards.
Glitzy, Glam, and Shiny

Inspired by Day of the Dead looks, this skull-adorned pumpkin will sparkle well through November 1st. We suggest downloading a line drawing of a similar design to help as you plan your design.
After painting your pumpkin black, use chalk to lightly outline your skull design onto the surface. Then, proceed with placing each piece of glitz onto the pattern. Tile nippers will help you shape your glass mosaic pieces to more precise dimensions.
Use uniform shapes for spots like teeth, eyes, and flower petals.

Add a little bit of disco to your holiday dinner table with a bejeweled pumpkin! This mosaic project is pretty simple: A few handfuls of round glass mosaic tiles, glued more or less into vertical rows. Vinyl gloves are recommended for this craft, as a lot of glue will be involved!
Materials:
Round glass tiles and perfect placement on a mosaic table are the perfect combo. You can make this jaunty Jack o’ Lantern quite easily! Take note: When assembling your mosaic rounds, select more than one shade of orange for the body of the pumpkin. The varying oranges on this fellow are part of his charm.
Place the black pieces for his mouth and nose first. After filling in around them, glue the eyes with their round felt circles last. Top him off with a found hat, or create your own with the leftover black felt!

Flatter-y Will Get You Everywhere
These mosaic pumpkin projects use conventional wooden craft cutouts as their base. They’re less bulky to work on, and can be hung up anywhere when completed. Try them out as part of a seasonal wreath!

Wooden craft shapes are easy to find - you’re likely to see a variety of pumpkin-themed pieces out there. We like the simplicity of this project: No painting, no fuss.
Before you get started, lightly sketch the lines of your pumpkin onto the wood. This will help you determine just what size or shape of tiles you’ll use. For this particular pumpkin, the crafter used non-traditional colors. For a similar look, utilize lighter pieces for the vertical lines, and keep the upper portion of the pumpkin orange.
You’ll need to create some rectangular pieces to create the traditional ridges on the pumpkin, as with the terracotta pumpkin above. Again, use our guide to help you get the right shapes! Once you’ve glued all the pieces into place, allow time for the glue to dry completely before using outdoors.

Same concept as above, but with a totally different execution! The safe shapes used here are buttons, and are safe for children’s fingers to work with. Simply gather up a variety of autumn-hued buttons to create this mosaic art.
First, lay down your black ribbon to create the vertical lines, and glue them into place. Then, have fun gluing down your buttons in a pattern that you find pleasing. There’s no way to mess it up - just have fun and cover the surface completely. A final dusting of glitter is optional.
Non-Traditional Mosaic for All Ages
If you’d like to help kids or anyone with limited dexterity explore the idea of mosaic art and design, these crafts are a great introduction - and perfect for Fall.
Materials:
Easy! Yes! Fun! Yes! This craft used black paint and orange painters tape - but consider switching up the color combinations for even more zest.
First, paint your pumpkin, using a matte black paint. Once it’s completely dry - really dry - you can begin working up your design with the tape. Cut out irregular geometric shapes and apply them as you will - leaving an appropriate amount of space between the pieces.
Once you’ve added all the tape “tiles” to the pumpkin, rub them gently with a soft cloth to make sure that they adhere smoothly and strongly to the surface.

Here’s another mosaic project that’s low on fuss and gives a great result! First, paint your pumpkin completely with white paint, and allow the paint to dry. Next, using scissors and foam makeup sponges, create a variety of shapes that will serve as your painted tile pieces.
After dipping each shape into your color of paint, stamp it onto the surface of the pumpkin. Continue until you’ve covered the surface and are happy with the design. Change up the sizes of your pumpkins to create a set.

Don’t you love the wonderful hodgepodge of this pumpkin? To create your own version, add grout in a layer that’s deep enough to sink your trinkets into. You’ll need to work quickly, so have your materials ready at hand.
Place each item into the damp grout - we recommend wearing gloves, to avoid getting the grout all over your hands as you work. Your only limit is your imagination! Create a theme, or just use up all those bits and bobs you’ve had sitting around in a drawer: lone earrings, lost game pieces, or tiny souvenirs you’d forgotten about.
Be sure to give your mosaic pumpkin plenty of time to dry!

We love the texture and color of these glass mosaic pumpkins. With iridescent finishes and undersea hues, they’re quite a standout!
To get this look, tint your grout in advance. Premixed grout is easy to blend with your acrylic paints, allowing you to achieve just the right shade. After applying a thin layer to the surface of your pumpkin, you’ll be applying mosaic tile in one of three shapes: square, diamond, and teardrop. (Instructions on how to create those shapes here.)
To get the look of the stems shown in the photo, wrap the stems with twine, then give them a good coat of metallic silver paint.
